Oscars 2025: Women Are Shaking Things Up and Making History!

The 2025 Oscars were a night to remember, with history being made left and right. From stunning performances to groundbreaking wins, the awards highlighted the incredible talent of women who are taking Hollywood by storm. WISE is here to celebrate those phenomenal women and, of course, Sean Baker, who made history in his own right. Let’s dive in!

Women Making Waves in Hollywood

This year’s Academy Awards proved that women are absolutely dominating the industry. The wins were powerful and inspiring, with actresses and filmmakers breaking barriers and leaving a lasting impact.

Mikey Madison delivered a knockout performance in Anora, winning Best Actress for her portrayal of a young sex worker whose life takes an unexpected twist. Her heartfelt acceptance speech was as emotional as her performance, and it was clear that the Oscar was truly earned.

Then, we had the trailblazing Zoe Saldaña, who made history as the first American of Dominican descent to win an Oscar for her role in Emilia Pérez. Saldaña’s powerful performance in the film earned her the Best Supporting Actress award, cementing her place as one of the most celebrated actresses of our time. A huge milestone for representation!

And it wasn’t just actors who shone. Molly O’Brien and Lisa Marie won the Best Documentary Oscar for The Only Girl in the Orchestra. This film highlights the struggles and triumphs of women musicians breaking barriers in a male-dominated world. Talk about girl power!

Sean Baker's Historic Night: 4 Oscars in One Night!

Now, let’s talk about a truly historic achievement: Sean Baker. The director, who co-wrote, co-produced, and edited Anora, made history by winning four Oscars in one night for the same film. Yes, you read that right—Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing all went to Anora at the 97th Academy Awards.

This monumental win makes Baker the first-ever person to win four Oscars for the same film, tying Walt Disney’s record, but with a twist: Disney won four Oscars for four different projects, whereas Baker’s wins were all for Anora. This puts Baker’s achievement in a league of its own.

More Historic Moments: I’m Still Here and Emilia Pérez

In a surprise twist, the Best International Feature category turned out to be a nail-biter. Despite Emilia Pérez’s 13 nominations, it was Brazil’s I’m Still Here that took home the Oscar, much to the delight of Brazilian cinema lovers. A major win for Brazil and a reminder of the power of international cinema at the Oscars.

But let’s not forget about Karla Sofía Gascón, who made history as the first transgender woman to be nominated in any acting category at the Oscars. While Gascón did not win for her role in Emilia Pérez, her nomination was a huge step forward for the industry’s ongoing fight for representation.

The Iranian Victory: In the Shadow of the Cypress

And let’s take a moment to celebrate the Iranian directors Hossein Molayemi and Shirin Sohani, who won Best Animated Short Film for In the Shadow of the Cypress. Their victory was especially sweet because they barely made it to the Oscars due to visa complications, arriving just hours before the ceremony. Their win is a testament to perseverance and dedication in the face of adversity.

It’s Clear: Women Are Leading the Charge

At WISE, we’re incredibly proud to see women & marginalized voices, along with the men who collaborate with them, who continue to shape the future of cinema. Their stories are inspiring, and their accomplishments are paving the way for generations to come. Here’s to every storyteller and artists who made history at the 2025 Oscars—and to those who will continue to break down barriers in the years ahead.
