Honoring Impact: Devery Jacobs Breaking Barriers and Empowering Indigenous Voices in Hollywood
In honor of National Native American Heritage Month, WISE is proud to spotlight Devery Jacobs, an Indigenous actress, filmmaker, and activist whose career is breaking barriers in the entertainment industry. Through her powerful performances and advocacy, Jacobs is paving the way for greater representation of Indigenous voices in Hollywood.
A Rising Star:
Devery Jacobs first gained recognition for her role in the 2013 film Rhymes for Young Ghouls, earning a nomination at the Canadian Screen Awards. She is now best known for her role as Elora Danan in the critically acclaimed series Reservation Dogs on FX/Hulu. For this role, Jacobs has received a Critics' Choice Award nomination and a Gotham Award nomination, along with an Independent Spirit Award for Best Ensemble Cast in a New Series.
Filmmaking & Advocacy:
In addition to her acting career, Jacobs is making strides as a filmmaker. Her directorial debut, Stolen, won Best Aboriginal Film at the Yorkton Film Festival, and her second short, Rae, received accolades at the ImagineNATIVE Film Festival. Her recent project, Backspot, premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival.
Jacobs is also known for her activism. She co-founded the Kahnawà
Youth Forum to advocate for Indigenous rights and uses her platform to champion both Indigenous and LGBTQ2S+ causes. She was featured on the cover ofTeen Vogue’s New Hollywood issue in 2022 and named to the Out100 list in 2021.
